Standard rubber hardens as temperatures fall, which reduces the tire’s grip. Winter tires use a compound built to stay soft in that same cold.
Its softer compound and deeper tread keep more of the tread in contact with snow and ice. That added contact shortens the distance needed to brake.
Not on its own. All-wheel drive helps with acceleration, but braking and cornering grip come from the tires themselves.
