Driving in Saskatchewan
Step 3 of 4
Registration and Insurance, Together
Getting your Chevrolet road‑ready in Saskatchewan works differently than in most provinces. Registration and basic insurance are purchased together in one step. RMP Chevrolet helps where we can and clarifies what is expected of you as the owner.
Licence, Registration, and Insurance Through SGI
Saskatchewan Government Insurance, known as SGI, handles driver licensing, vehicle registration, and basic auto insurance for the whole province. When you register your vehicle and buy your licence plates, a basic package of insurance is included automatically. That basic package covers liability, personal injury, and damage to your own vehicle, subject to a deductible.
- You need a valid Saskatchewan driver’s licence before you can register a vehicle in your name. If you’re new to driving or new to the province, we’ll point you toward the right licensing resources.
- Registration and basic insurance are purchased together at an SGI motor licence issuer.
- If you want coverage beyond the basic package, that extra protection is arranged separately, through an insurance broker. This can include a lower deductible, higher liability limits, or additional coverage for accessories and aftermarket equipment.
What to Expect at the Time of Sale
Buying a vehicle means completing paperwork to establish ownership, arranging your registration and basic insurance, and getting your plates sorted. At the time of sale, we’ll cover:
- What ownership documents you’ll need to bring in.
- Whether you can transfer plates from a vehicle you already own.
- How taxes and registration fees are calculated and collected.
We handle much of this process directly at the dealership, since Saskatchewan lets dealers coordinate registration for new‑vehicle buyers. That keeps the paperwork simple and straightforward, and in many cases you’ll leave with your plates already sorted.
Picking Up Your Chevrolet
RMP Chevrolet is located on the southern edge of Regina, at the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 6. When you come in to finalize paperwork and collect your vehicle, we’ll confirm everything is in order.
We’ll check that you have the right documents and walk you through any final signatures. Then we’ll give you a quick rundown of your Chevrolet’s features before you drive off – including any driver‑assist technology and infotainment features on board, along with a reminder of when your first scheduled maintenance visit is due.
