Chevrolet Camaro: An Electric SUV in 2027?

Silhouetted sports car, sleek design highlighted against a dark background.

With the Mustang firmly established in its segment and the new generation of the Charger making waves, it’s fair to say that the Chevrolet Camaro is shining by its absence in the market.

Since its departure, there’s been constant talk about the Camaro’s return — but is there anything concrete to report? For now, no, as General Motors has numerous projects on the table, and the Camaro is not a priority. However, some rumors began circulating online earlier this week.

An Electric SUV

You may not know this, but the fully electric Mustang Mach-E is now more popular than the legendary muscle car it borrows its name from. In short, it’s not hard to imagine Chevrolet envisioning a scenario similar to Ford’s.

The idea of the Camaro name existing in the form of a fully electric SUV is far from bad — quite the opposite. The Mustang Mach-E faced heavy criticism when it first hit the market, but time has softened opinions. Now that there’s a precedent, the idea would likely be easier for purists and fans of the two-door muscle car version of the Camaro to accept.

Another factor weighing heavily in this scenario is that General Motors is also enjoying huge success with its lineup of electric vehicles — something most of its competitors can’t claim. The American group can therefore afford a certain level of diversity in its EV offerings, which is actually a good thing.

General Motors already offers performance versions of its electric SUVs under the Cadillac brand, and some sporty variants are impressive in the GMC lineup, particularly the Hummer duo. However, there is no performance-oriented electric product under the Chevrolet name, and this is where the Camaro name could step in.

Rumors mention several versions, with power ranging from 250 to over 1,000 horsepower. One thing is certain: we are eager to learn more about the subject and see whether the rumors will become reality. We should have a clearer picture in the coming months, as a launch is expected in 2027 — meaning the first details should emerge in 2026. For now, it’s worth noting that General Motors has not confirmed anything on this matter.
