You probably won’t be able to drive far these days without coming across a Chevrolet Traverse on the road, and there are plenty of very good reasons for that. The 2021 Chevrolet Traverse is a handsome, spacious, and comfortable crossover SUV with seating for up to eight people and prices that rivals struggle to match. Throw in a very capable V-6 engine and generous levels of standard equipment and it’s easy to see why the Traverse is so prolific these days.
You’re limited to just two trim level choices if you really must have a front-drive version of the Traverse here in Canada, but you have a lot more choice if you want the extra capability of all-wheel-drive. The two trim levels that are available in front-wheel-drive form are the entry-level LS and the LT.
Both of those models are also available with all-wheel-drive, but the Traverse with all-wheel-drive is also available in RS, True North, Premier, and High Country trim levels. The top-level High Country trim level is heading towards twice as expensive as the entry-level front-drive Traverse LS, but that only further emphasizes just how affordable the eight-seat Traverse can be.
If there’s something that certainly doesn’t give away the affordable pricing of the 20212 Traverse it has to be the way it looks. The Traverse is probably a little more rounded and softer with its exterior styling than most other Chevy SUVs, but it’s a look that fits in just as well outside your local school as it does in the parking lot of the Royal Regina Golf Club.
A big vehicle designed to carry up to eight people and their stuff certainly needs an engine that’s up to the job, and Chevy hasn’t let buyers down in any way with the engine it uses in all versions of the 2021 Traverse. The engine in question is a 3.6-litre V-6 that puts out a very capable 310 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque, which then gets sent to the front or all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
This powertrain is definitely up to the task and is smooth, refined, and relatively quick when pushed with a light load. The Traverse can even tow up to 2,268 kg (5,000 pounds) when properly equipped, so it’s perfect for weekend outdoor adventures to any of the great locations around Last Mountain Lake.
You’re obviously not going to get Chevy Spark fuel economy from a three-row mid-size SUV that seats up to eight people, but the Traverse certainly won’t force you to buy shares in a gas station either. Front-drive models are rated at 13 L/100 km in the city and 8.8 L/100 km on the highway, and all-wheel-drive versions are rated at 13.6 L/100 km in the city and 9.6 L/100 km on the highway.
There will be plenty of Traverse buyers who don’t have large families but a vehicle of this size and nature has to cater to the family market, and it certainly does. Base models come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, a full set of power features, no fewer than six USB ports, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, 10 cup holders, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, a passenger sensing system, rear vision camera, teen driver feature and tri-zone automatic climate control.
At the other end of the trim level spectrum, High Country models come standard with a premium Bose audio system, a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, power-adjustable front seats, heated and cooled first and heated second-row seating, wireless smartphone charging, a raft of active safety features, leather upholstery, 20-inch alloys, a panoramic sunroof and plenty more.
The 2021 Chevrolet Traverse is a big SUV with an awful lot to offer to a wide variety of potential buyers. It’s the perfect vehicle for large families, of course, but the flexibility of its spacious interior makes it a versatile vehicle with many different uses.
