If you need a small car for a new driver or as an extra car in a multi-car household you may be tempted to look at buying used, but the 2021 Chevrolet Spark is a car that really should make you think again. Nothing beats the peace of mind of a brand new car with a full-blown manufacturer warranty and that’s exactly what you get with the Chevy Spark, but the Spark is priced so attractively it’s probably more affordable than late used versions of some of its rivals.
Buyers expect our smallest cars to look a certain way, and nothing about the way the Spark looks will put anybody off. It’s easy for some small cars to go too cutesy, too funky, too feminine, or too youthful with their designs in order to stand out a little, but going too far in any of those directions can easily alienate as many potential buyers as it attracts. The Spark has the right amount of each of those attributes and not too much, so this is a small car that anyone can feel happy driving around in.
Despite its extremely compact exterior proportions, the interior of the 2021 Chevy Spark is a lot more spacious than you might imagine. The front seats have a generous amount of legroom and they come in a range of attractive fabric coverings. The only area where the Spark loses out in terms of interior space to an SUV with a similar footprint would be headroom, but only the very tallest of people would have issues with headroom in the Spark the same way they probably would in most hatches, sedans or coupes.
One of the main reasons people buy small cars is because they don’t want to spend a huge amount of money on gas driving around the likes of Harbour Landing, Hillsdale, or Whitmore Park, and the Spark is as efficient as you’d expect a car of these proportions to be. The most fuel-efficient CVT-equipped versions of the Spark are rated at 7.7 L/100 km in the city and 6.2 L/100 km on the highway, while those with a stick-shift are rated at 8.0 L/100 km in the city and 6.2 L/100km on the highway.
The engine that helps deliver these ratings is 1.4-litre inline-four that develops 98 horsepower and 94 lb.-ft. of torque, which goes to the front wheels of the Spark through a five-speed manual or a continuous variable transmission (CVT).
You currently have three different trim levels to choose from in the 2021 Chevrolet Spark family, although the Chevy Canada website makes it look as though there are five because two of them are available with either the manual or CVT transmissions. The base trim level is the LS, the mid-range model is the LT, and the top-of-the-range variant is the 2LT that is only available with the CVT.
If you put things in perspective and keep Spark’s remarkably affordable price at the forefront of your mind you’ll be pretty impressed with what you actually get for so little money. The entry-level Spark comes with everything you need for those quick trips to places like the Farmers’ Market in City Square Plaza, but if you want a little more for those longer journeys the LT and 2LT are happy to oblige.
Base LS models come standard with a rearview camera, USB data ports, tire pressure monitoring system, driver information system, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with a 7.0-inch diagonal colour touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
The 1LT adds the likes of cruise control, power features, satellite radio, a six-speaker audio system, daytime running lights, alloy wheels, keyless start, climate control and heated front seats to the base trim. If you go all the way to the 2LT you’ll then be getting standard automatic emergency braking, some chrome trim, a Driver Confidence Package, the Enhanced Driver Information Centre, rear park assist, and leatherette upholstery.
The 2021 Chevrolet Spark is a great little car that represents stunning value for money, and it really will make you wonder why anyone would take a chance on a used subcompact costing a similar amount.
