When the job at hand requires more capability than a light-duty pickup truck has to offer, it’s time to send for the heavy-duty boys. The first heavy-duty level in the Chevrolet lineup is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, and after its dramatic restyling last year it’s back with even more to offer for the 2021 model year.
It’s still as incredibly stylish, versatile, capable, and durable pickup as ever, but it now comes with even more advanced trailering technology and five appearance packages to help you get exactly the right truck for your needs and tastes. The Silverado is as comfortable on the construction site as it is taking the family for a day out at Wascana Centre Park.
The days when heavy-duty trucks were largely the preserve of tough worksites and grueling commercial highway hauling are long gone, and the 2021 Chevy Silverado 2500HD illustrates why. The 2500HD can be configured in an almost mind-boggling array of different ways to suit just about any application you can think of.
You can have your Silverado HD in WT (Work Truck), Custom, LT, LTZ, and range-topping High Country trim levels, but that’s just the start. Buyers also have a choice of two and four-wheel-drive, gas, and diesel V-8 engines, three different cabs, standard and long beds, and five appearance packages that include the Z71 Sport, Z71 Chrome Sport, Midnight Edition, Texas, and Carhartt special edition.
And on top of all that you have an array of exterior and interior colours, superb alloy wheel options, some sensational interior styles, and an extensive options list to make your truck turn heads as you drive along Highway 1 to Moose Jaw or anywhere else for that matter.
The base engine in the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD sounds and feels anything but entry-level. The unit in question is a 6.6-litre gas V-8 that puts out an impressive 401 horsepower and 464 lb.-ft. of torque. In most ways it can be configured it makes the Silverado capable of towing up to 14,500 pounds, but the most capable specification allows this unit to tow up to as much as 17,370 pounds.
Of course, no self-respecting heavy-duty truck family would be complete without a diesel option and the 2500HD is no exception. The oil burner we have here is a 6.6-litre V-8 turbodiesel, and this ultra-capable powerplant produces 445 horsepower and an awesome 910 lb.-ft. of torque. The maximum conventional tow rating for the diesel is 18,500 pounds and the maximum payload is as much as 3,979 pounds.
A six-speed, heavy-duty, electronically controlled automatic transmission is standard in most cases, but many will want to upgrade to one of the optional Allison 10-speed automatics that are available.
If you were to sit down and write a list of exactly what you want on and in your new heavy-duty pickup truck, it’s almost certain there’d be a 2021 Silverado 2500HD that would fit the bill. If there wasn’t, all you’d have to do is raid the options list and the truck of dreams would become a reality right before your eyes on the order sheet.
As its name suggests, the Work Truck (WT) is a relatively basic model designed primarily for fleet and commercial applications, but even this one comes standard with more than you might think. WT models come with air conditioning; a rearview camera; and the Chevrolet 3 infotainment system that features a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth audio streaming, and phone connectivity, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
LT models are where retail buyers will probably start looking as they add features such as Wi-Fi hotspot capability, a six-speaker audio system, cruise control, power locks and windows, remote keyless entry, and steering-wheel-mounted controls.
There are many ways you can upgrade the LT to tailor it to your needs, and if you go up the trim levels and raid the options list you can have just about any feature in the Silverado you can get in a luxury sedan.
Whatever you need your truck to do and however you plan to use it, there’s a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD that’s right for the job.
