The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST could probably be described as being in the Goldilocks zone because for many buyers it will be the version of this full-size, light-duty pickup truck that’s just right for them. It comes standard much better equipped than entry-level models, but it doesn’t cost as much as some of the highest trims that give prestige sedans and SUVs a run for their money in terms of luxury and features.
Of course, the RST still comes with the same rugged, reliable, versatile and ridiculously capable attributes as any other version of this legendary full-size pickup.
The RST may be a single trim level in the 2021 Silverado 1500 lineup but it’s certainly not a one-trick pony as it can be configured in several different ways. You can have a Silverado 1500 RST in rear or all-wheel-drive formats, and which drivetrain you go for actually determines where the RST sits in the Silverado lineup. A rear-drive RST is only one level down from the top two-wheel-drive trims, but in all-wheel-drive form, it’s right in the mid-range with the three higher trims and four lower trims in the range than the RST.
In two-wheel-drive form, the RST is only available with a crew cab and a short truck bed, but all-wheel-drive versions come in double cab/standard bed, crew cab/short bed, and crew cab/standard bed body styles.
You can have any one of three different engines under the hood of a rear-drive Silverado 1500 RST and all-wheel-drive versions have no less than four different engine options available. The standard powerplant is a 2.7-litre turbo-four that puts out 310 horsepower and 348 lb.-ft. of torque. Next up is a 5.3-litre EcoTec3 V-8 engine with DFM which then provides the RST with 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, and then there’s a 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel offering 277 horsepower and a very capable 460 lb.-ft. of torque.
Those are three engines that can be had with rear or all-wheel drivetrains, but all-wheel-drive variants have another trick up their sleeve in the shape of a mighty 6.2-litre EcoTec3 V-8 engine that develops 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque
An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard but the 5.3-litre V-8 has the option of upgrading to Chevy’s excellent 10-speed automatic transmission, and the 10-speed unit is standard with both the turbodiesel and the 6.2-litre V-8.
The RST is a sporty-looking version of the Silverado with nice touches such as black bowtie logos on the front grille and the standard 18-inch Bright Silver painted aluminum wheels. Other standard RST features include cargo bed LED lighting; LED headlights, taillights, and fog lamps; EZ Lift Tailgate with power lock and release; a 10-way power driver’s seat; Driver Information Centre; and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with 8.0-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
That’s not all though as you also get dual-zone climate control, cruise control, a Trailering Package, heated driver and front outboard passenger seats, a heated steering wheel, keyless open and start, a rear vision camera, and plenty more.
The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST might just be all the full-size pickup truck most people need. It’s as flexible, capable, and rugged as any other Silverado 1500 but it also comes with its own sporty style and a very healthy helping of standard features and equipment.
