No matter what it is you want or need from a full-size light-duty pickup truck the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has got it covered, and then some. Although there are no changes this year to the design of the Silverado or its powertrains, Chevy has carried out major surgery on the specifications to allow buyers even more opportunity for tailoring their 1500 to their specific needs.
There are new colors, new wheels designs, and a lot of changes to what is and isn’t available in certain configurations, so let’s take a look at a little of what you can expect from the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
There are eight different trim levels to choose between in the 2021 Silverado 1500 lineup, but choosing a trim level is definitely only the start of building your new truck. The 1500 family starts with the entry-level and perfectly named WT (Work Truck), which is exactly what it says it is, and then the range goes to the Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, LT Trail Boss, RST, LTZ, and the range-topping High Country.
Of course, as well as the eight different trim levels, buyers also have a choice of three different cabs, three bed lengths, six different engines, and a raft of colors, interiors, options and packages to make the Silverado exactly how they want i
Unless you need the immense power and capability of a heavy-duty truck, you’re going to be able to find the engine that’s exactly right for your needs among the six that are currently on offer for the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
The base engine is a 4.3-litre V-6 that makes 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque and sends its power to the rear or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Although a lot of people might discount the idea of a four-cylinder engine in a truck like the Silverado 1500, the second engine in the lineup shouldn’t be overlooked just because it’s “only” a four-pot.
This 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit develops 310 horsepower and 348 lb.-ft. of torque that goes to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic, and as well as being a capable engine for towing it also delivers some impressive fuel economy.
Next up is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbodiesel with 277 horsepower and an impressive 460 lb.-ft. of torque that comes mated to an excellent 10-speed automatic transmission, and then we get into the serious business of the gas V-8s. The 5.3-litre V-8 comes in two different versions that can be mated to your choice between 6-, 8- and 10-speed automatic transmissions and these engines also have a cylinder deactivation feature for improved efficiency.
The most powerful engine on offer is a mighty 6.2-litre V-8 which then gives you 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque to play with and it comes mated to that excellent 10-speed automatic.
You don’t have to go for the most powerful and capable version of the Silverado if you don’t need it, but it’s good to know what this sensational pickup truck is capable of if you do need the most it has to offer. If you’re interested in towing with your truck, which you almost certainly are, the Silverado can tow up to 13,400 pounds when it has the 6.2-litre V-8 onboard and four-wheel-drive, while models equipped with the turbodiesel are rated to tow up to 9,300 pounds.
The Silverado is no lightweight when it comes to hauling either as the maximum payload is an extremely useful 2,250 pounds.
Perhaps surprisingly for some, there isn’t a huge difference in fuel economy between the six different powertrains. The turbodiesel is best and the 10-speed automatic helps with fuel economy, so you can get as much as 8.7 L/100km combined with the diesel engine and rear-wheel-drive. The turbo-four is next best with a combined rating of 11.2 L/100km, while the V-8s and the standard V-6 all tend to return around 13.8 L/100 km combined.
We could write a book big enough to chock the wheels of a jumbo jet about the almost limitless number of ways you can configure and specify a new 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, but all you really need to know is the truck you want and need is definitely there.
