The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu is a great example of why the midsize sedan segment was the most fiercely competitive area of the auto market until the world went SUV crazy. The 2021 Malibu is a sensational-looking car with an impressive performance that’s also quiet, comfortable, spacious, well-equipped, and excellent value for money.
The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu looks sleek and stylish from every angle and the sloping roofline is reminiscent of some German luxury cars costing more than twice as much as this attractively priced Chevy. The curvy lines running down the side of the Malibu look their best when accompanied by the bigger wheels the car is available with and the broad front grille and gently bulged hood hint at some above-average performance.
There are four different versions of the Malibu to choose between for the 2021 model year. The entry-level version of this midsize Chevy sedan is the LS and then the range goes to the RS, LT, and finally to the top of the range Malibu Premier. There are no unnecessary all-wheel-drive options to worry about with the Malibu so all four versions are standard front-wheel-drive.
There are two different engine options for the 2021 Malibu and they’re both modern, turbocharged, four-cylinder units. The standard powerplant is a 1.5-litre turbo-four that develops a lively 160 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque which is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT does a convincing job of simulating rear gear shifts and it also helps deliver decent fuel economy ratings of 8.2 L/100 km in the city and 6.6 L/100 km on the highway.
If you’d like to have the more powerful engine under the hood of your new Malibu you’ll have to opt for the top Premier trim level as every other version of the car gets the standard 1.5-litre engine. The Premier trim level’s engine is a 2.0-litre turbo-four which then gives the 2021 Chevrolet Malibu an impressive 250 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque to play with. This time, however, all that power goes to the front wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission instead of the CVT. Fuel economy ratings for this powerplant come in at 10.7 L/100 km in the city and 7.1 L/100 km on the highway.
You may struggle to find a base Malibu LS in dealerships as it’s only available in two colours, it’s probably aimed more at fleets than retail buyers, and it doesn’t cost a great deal more to step up to the more generously equipped RS trim level.
Malibu RS standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic on/off headlamps, 10 airbags, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability, air conditioning, an 8-way power driver’s seat, cruise control, a full complement of power features, keyless open and start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System with 8-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
LT models add the likes of heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and remote start, while top-level Premier models come with a 120-volt power outlet, adaptive cruise control, automatic parking assist, a Bose premium 9-speaker audio system, Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system with navigation, HD rear vision camera and some of the more advanced driver-assist and safety features.
The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu is a great reminder of how practical, comfortable, stylish, versatile, and desirable a sedan can still be, and all that and more comes at a very attractive price compared to many SUVs of a similar size and quality.
