Forget everything you may remember about previous Chevrolet models bearing the Blazer nameplate as the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer is different in just about every conceivable way. The performance and handling of this five-seat midsize crossover are seriously compelling reasons for checking the Blazer out, but it’s probably the exterior styling that will turn heads everywhere from Harbour Landing to Tregarva and beyond that will attract most buyers first.
For the majority of potential buyers of the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer, the exterior styling has to be what gets them interested first. From the side, the Blazer is fairly standard mid-size crossover fare, but the front and back are striking, to say the least, and there’s real aggression about the design of the front fascia. If you like your SUVs to look sporty, futuristic, and mildly aggressive, the Blazer is the place to start, especially if you go for a model with the available Midnight/Sport Edition package.
There are four different trim levels to choose from in the current Chevrolet Blazer lineup, and between them, they cater to a fairly wide range of potential suitors. The entry-level model is the LT and then the range goes through True North and RS trims before the lineup concludes with the range-topping Blazer Premier.
The Blazer delivers a sportier ride and sharper steering than the majority of crossovers in its class, and this is further accentuated by the raspy exhaust of the RS edition that will certainly get you noticed if you rev it hard in the Southland Mall parking lot.
This is perhaps one of those relatively rare cases where a large number of buyers will be more than happy with the base engine, which is a 2.0-litre turbo-four that develops 227 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. If you do prefer the roar of a more powerful traditional V-6 you’re well catered for by the Blazer with a 3.6-litre unit that boasts 308 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.
Both engines come mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, but the only way to have a front-drive Blazer is with the base LT model that comes with the 2.0-litre turbo-four. All other versions of the 2021 Chevrolet Blazer are standard AWD models here in Canada.
What people want in terms of vehicle features changes as the years go by, and nowadays there’s a heavy focus on connectivity and entertainment. Chevy obviously understands and the standard infotainment system in the Blazer really is excellent. It’s an 8.0-inch touchscreen system with Bluetooth audio streaming and phone connectivity and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Every version of the 2021 Blazer also comes complete with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
Base LT versions of the Blazer come standard with 18-inch Bright Silver aluminum wheels, auto on/off LED headlights, LED tail lights, deep-tinted glass, body-colour door handles, and mirror caps. On the inside, you’ll find a six-speaker audio system, an 8-way power driver’s seat, USB charging points, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, an HD rear vision camera, and that superb Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system.
Top-of-the-line Premier models get 20-inch Medium Android machined-face alloy wheels, a Bose premium 8-speaker audio system, heated front and rear outboard seats, memory front seats, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus System with navigation and an 8-inch diagonal HD colour touchscreen.
The 2021 Chevrolet Blazer is one of those vehicles you’ll probably fall for as soon as you see it, but unlike with some rivals that look good at first glance, you’re unlikely to experience any feelings of disappointment when you take a closer look. The Chevrolet Blazer is an excellent midsize crossover SUV whichever angle or perspective you approach it from, but don’t just take our word for it.
